What is truth?

"What is truth?"

Today, the Christian church all around the world commemorates Good Friday, the anniversary of the crucifixion of Jesus.  The question,"What is truth?" is as pertinent today as it was on that day 2,000 years ago.  It came in the context of an interesting conversation between Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor of Jerusalem, and Jesus Himself.

Then Pilate went back into his headquarters and called for Jesus to be brought to him. "Are you the king of the Jews?" he asked him.

Jesus replied, "Is this your own question, or did others tell you about me?"

"Am I a Jew??" Pilate retorted. "Your own people and their leading priests brought you to me for trial. Why? What have you done?"

Jesus answered, "My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world."

Pilate said, "So..you are a King?"

Jesus responded, "You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. all who love the truth recognize that what I say is true."

"What is truth?" Pilate asked. Then he went out again to the peole and told them, "He is not guilty of any crime..."

The Gospel of John, Chapter 18, verses 33-38 (New Living Translation)

On this Friday in March of 2013, a question for meditation in each of our lives might well be, "What is truth?"  Is truth found in some philosophical axiom, a mathematical solution? Or perhaps, might truth be found in the person of Christ?

In the famous words of C.S. Lewis, we are forced to choose between just a few options - either Jesus was who He said He was; or he was a religious lunatic, a fanatic and crazy person.  He cannot be both.

Who is He to you this Good Friday? And what does that mean for your life?

What is truth?
