Rescue the Babies: The Death Spiral that is Planned Parenthood

Rescue those being led away to death; hold back
those staggering toward slaughter.
Proverbs 24:11
The Planned Parenthood video.  Let's talk about it.

I understand fully, before I write these words, that some will be outraged by what I say, others will feel hurt or shame, and others will agree with my perspective.

I'd like to back up and tell you about a reading habit that I first picked up, as an adolescent. Candidly, I can't recall whether a Sunday School teacher or a Youth Minister suggested it, but someone back there in my young days suggested reading through the biblical book of Proverbs each month.  With 31 chapters, it is easy to use as a daily reading plan, and because of its practical wisdom about living life, I have always loved it.  For most of the last 30-40 years, I have been reading 1 chapter each day in Proverbs, starting with chapter 1 on the first day of each month.  On the 24th day of each month, I have read chapter 24...hundreds of times I have read it, and every time I came to verse 11, the first thought that popped into my head was the babies.

"Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter."

An antagonist to my perspective could well point out, "You are reading something into the text. It doesn't say anything about babies! How do you know it's referring to babies and who are you to suggest such a thing?"  And the antagonist would have an excellent point.  I am nobody.  I am simply a woman who loves God and wants to share how our culture's spiral ever deeper into an amoral abyss impacts me.  I am only one person, who for more than 30 years has read this short sentence and unfailingly had the babies killed by abortion brought to mind.

Surely you have read something, sometime in your life, and it brought something else to mind.  This is how our minds work, after all...by association.

During the Holocaust, a Jew or a Christian could easily have read this sentence from the Book of Proverbs and for them,  the Jewish people were brought to mind.  They too were led away to death, staggering toward slaughter, not just under the brutal Nazi regime of the 1930s and 1940s, but in years past, during the Babylonian Exile.  If we sat and thought about it, I am sure other associations would come to mind.  For me, abortion comes to mind.  Perhaps because I came of age in the years immediately following the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973.

Without making this a statistical diatribe, know that well over 1 million babies are "terminated" each year.  Yes, I know it may be easier to stomach the phrase "terminated pregnancy," but what is a pregnancy exactly?  Have you ever known a pregnancy that led to something other than a baby? No.  We are terminating babies.

Sit with this for a moment: We the People of the United States of America, are terminating more than 1 million babies each year.

Let us now consider the video recording which surfaced in the news this week - undercover footage of Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s Senior Director of Medical Services, Dr. Deborah Nucatola, describing how Planned Parenthood sells the body parts of aborted unborn children and admitting she uses partial-birth abortions to supply intact body parts. In the video, Nucatola is at a business lunch with actors posing as buyers from a human biologics company. As head of PPFA’s Medical Services department, Nucatola has overseen medical practice at all Planned Parenthood locations since 2009. She also trains new Planned Parenthood abortion doctors and performs abortions herself at Planned Parenthood Los Angeles up to 24 weeks. Various versions of this video can be accessed on YouTube and through various news outlets. I have included a link to the full, unedited video...which lasts more than 2 hours.  I chose to use this link because many of Planned Parenthood's defenders say the video clip (typically 8-10 minutes of the 2 hours) is edited to mislead.  On the contrary, watching the 2 hour unedited version is exponentially more horrifying than the 8 minute excerpt. Horrifying seems too weak an adjective. It is sickening, and apart from the certainty we have that God holds us in His hands and will ultimately bring justice as justice is required, one could easily be brought to a point of absolute despair while watching this physician speak so callously of babies and their tiny, precious body parts.

What is happening to us? How can a physician sit impassively and sip wine while discussing how to crush certain body parts of a baby while leaving other parts untouched...in order to make those "valuable parts" available for sale?  Where is the heart? Where is the soul? The conscience? Have we as a people seared our individual and collective conscience to such a point the we can watch this video, or even just hear about its existence, and not be deeply moved...sickened even?

God, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.  Have mercy on us all.  Where will it end?  We must face up to the evil and take action.   We cannot sit idly by, and we cannot remain silent any longer. If anything has ever matters, this matters.  If immigration matters, if equality under the law matters, if justice matters, and if respect for the value of human life itself matters to you...we must not remain silent.

If you are pregnant and struggling, even perhaps believe an abortion is the only solution available to you from a painful and overwhelming situation...please know there are people, hundreds and thousands of people, who would love to help and who can help.  Please reach out to a resource center in your neighborhood, a local church, or a crisis help-line.  An unplanned or unwanted pregnancy is or can be an overwhelming situation, but there is so much help to be had, if you will only reach out and ask.  Women and girls do not have to face the crisis alone, and they never should.
