The Law of Attraction...

Over the years I've been involved in various lines of work, much of which has involved some kind of selling or another...actually, some people would tell us that we're all selling, whether we realize it or not...and that's where the law of attraction comes into play...

From a business perspective, there are scores of well-dressed, successful looking public speakers who will tell you that the secret to your success is linked to the law of attraction...and coincidentally, there are also scores of people who traffic as relationship-gurus who will likewise tell you the secret of your success in dating relationships is...yes, you guessed it: The Law of Attraction.

I find myself wondering what God would have to say about the law of attraction...or even Jesus. What do you think? By most all accounts, Jesus was never described as an attractive person (as humans typically define attraction), and yet...he attracted followers and devotees unlike anyone before or since. What was it about Jesus that was attractive to these people? What is it about Jesus that is attractive to people today?

If you follow Jesus...let me ask you a question...why? And another one, by the way...if you say you follow Jesus, what does that mean...exactly? What does it look like to be a follower of Jesus?

As you read this, it seems likely that you'll think I have a "right answer" in mind for the questions I've posed...I don't. Really. I ask the questions because I think they are worthy of asking...of myself...and of you. The answer(s) are important for what they reveal to each of us about the condition of our own hearts...and insomuch as they might help us to reconcile what we say we believe with the way in which we live our lives each day.

I registered for a race today...it's called "Hell Run", and it's a 3.5 run/obstacle course that traverses through 3 mud pits and 9 other 'obstacles,' like barbed-wire and walls of hay.... What's the connection to Jesus and to the law of attraction?? You might find this really, really strange, but I believe the connnection is found in the virtue of living life to its fullest...to engage in the joy of living, and to sometimes take our joy to extremes.

When you think about it, people who show up for mud runs are often very attractive types...and the thing about them that's attractive is the joy...the energy...the ability to let loose and love life! To be truthful, I've encountered a great deal more joy and energy for life at a 5K than I have at church, and I find that truth to be quite discouraging...

I'm not sure whether churches should start sponsoring mud runs or not, but if we hope to mirror the attractiveness of Jesus, we could stand to inject a lot more joy into the daily experiences of our lives.
